I saw some movies this weekend:
- The Hurt Locker – Absolutely riveting, and totally immersive in a way I can’t recall since Black Hawk Down. It’s one of the rare action movies that remembers that all good stories come from character first. One minor point: the advertising of various big-name actors in this movie is a hilarious fraud. They’re all cameos. But it doesn’t matter. This movie rocked.
- In The Loop – I don’t think I can recommend this movie unless you’re a political junkie, but I loved it. It’s full of all the same shockingly funny explicit tirades and witticisms as the BBC series it’s based on, The Thick Of It
(which I also loved). Malcolm Tucker is a samurai of profanity.
- Gone Baby Gone – Co-written and directed by Ben Affleck and starring his brother Casey, I missed this one when it was in the theaters. It was dark and enjoyable. Amy Ryan was excellent in a supporting role (though not especially attractive). I especially liked that the movie didn’t seem to take a stand on its own morally ambiguous ending — I personally disagreed with the final decision, and would’ve sided with the girlfriend. Too many movies shove their interpretations down your throat, but with this one it was clear that the audience was free to disagree.
The next movie that I’m looking forward to, for obvious reasons: Funny People.
