My first exposure to Joe Rogan was through his hilarious supporting role on the under-rated NewsRadio TV show (he’s more widely known as the former host of Fear Factor). I had heard that he was a stand-up comedian, but it wasn’t until several years later that I saw his act. He’s been one of my favorite comics ever since.

Now Joe is bringing his unique brand of brilliantly profane humor to basic cable, with a one hour comedy special airing tonight on Spike TV called Talking Monkeys in Space.1 He was recently interviewed by Sean McCarthy of The Comic’s Comic blog, where he talked about the new special, Carlos Mencia, Twitter, Dennis Miller post-9/11, Bo Burnham, and more. An excerpt from the wide-ranging interview:

What’s important to me is making sure I have a direct connection to the people who like my stuff. So I blog. I post to my message board almost every day, and I Twitter almost every day. If you do that, you maintain a connection with people. This is definitely the best era for stand-up comics…

Back in the day, what are you going to do? Answer mail? And lick envelopes and get stamps? Fuck that shit. That would take you all day. Emails take enough time to respond to personally.

Here’s the full interview.

Joe Rogan’s blog is updated fairly frequently, and is almost always entertaining. He’s not just an interesting writer, he’s also an artist with profanity in a way that I really admire, like Richard Pryor or, in a different medium, Kevin Smith.
