Overheard Backstage peers behind the curtain (or brick wall) into the offstage area where comics gossip, bicker, and make each other laugh.
My friend Andrew recently wrote about a story that he and I were told while hanging out backstage at Giggles. His long, thoughtful post made me think “goddamn, I wish I had written that!” So I thought I might do the next best thing and just jack the whole damn story:
There’s a story a good local guy tells. I’m withholding his name for a purpose. He met Carrot Top at a showcase. This comic had just done terrible. Was feeling like crap. Walked off stage. Carrot Top walked over and said “Hey good job, man.”
“Thanks Carrot Top.”
“My names Scott.”
“Oh. Thanks Scott.”
They ended up sitting down and having a few beers over a conversation.
“Hey do you ever take it personal when people make jokes at your expense?”
“Sometimes. But most of the people who do it are my friends. So I don’t care.”
Then ol Carrot Top launched into what should be a famous story.
He was sitting at the table waiting for a waitress friend. He had a hat on and his hair was all tucked in. He was overhearing a bunch of guys at the table next to him rag on him all day. They were too funny to be not getting this kind of stage time. Blah blah blah. Guys like carrot top are hack and they get all this. Blah blah blah.
Later on the bill comes and it’s a couple hundred dollars. They start scrambling not realizing they spent that much cash. They didn’t have enough to cover it. A couple minutes goes by before Carrot Top tells the waitress (his friend) that he’ll cover the tab, and put an extra $100 on for a tip.
The waitress walks over and says “Your tab has been taken care of.” and lets them be confused for a minute. She points to Carrot Top. Who kind of turns around. Raises up his beer and says “Hack Money.” and turns back around.
There are a number of possible morals to this story, but I think the most obvious one is that talking shit about other comics is a bad idea. Its never constructive, and just makes you look petty and small.
The secondary moral is that Carrot Top sounds like a pretty nice guy.
